Calais, Ete 2002
This painting was inspired by a brief summer seashore break near Honfleur, birthplace of Eric Satie. In one John Hiatt song, he sings of the waves as "Dream Generators" and that fits well with how I've always felt about the ocean. While my younger years spent on the California Pacific coastline provided a more robust model of this effect, the Normandy experience is a flatter, wider one, as if it was the Pacific stretched thin on the surface of a very large inflated balloon. Nonetheless, the small wheels turn, generating a moment to venture into one's imagination, giving respite to the endless hours of practical considerations.
