"The Tempest" in it's various stages of development.

January 2002 Starting in late December 2001 and going into the first days of January, I had the exceptionally good luck to have a commission to work on. As time was short, I had to advance the piece as quickly as possible. My experience of working with the computer offered me the opportunity to take each days' work in the studio to the computer screen in the evenings, in order to test out ideas for the next day's studio session. The paths provided by working on the computer allowed me to test out my thinking without losing (precious) time and help me find my way without unnecessary destruction of good passages in the painting. Sometimes these computerized leads evaporated as soon as I started painting but most importantly it helped maintain an agressive attitude toward the canvas. It greatly compressed what I would call passive/reflective time while working and kept the sessions in the studio vibrant and energetic. I do admit, however, I missed those reflective moments and hope that someday I will not have to "rush" time. |
